Racing Instinct. - Passing on the “R series” DNA -

- Humachine Technologies & Sensual Racing Form -
The YZF-R1 and YZF-R6 are equipped with under cowls that are based on the image of a diffuser, to give them the best form for aero-management. These are not cowls for simply enclosing the engine, but forms composed of blade surfaces that actively control airflow. This spirit has been directly inherited by the YZF-R15.
“Harmony between rider and machine.” YAMAHA's Human Technology involves studying the form of the motorcycle actually in motion with the rider on it. The R series is the embodiment of 1) a wide frontal space that protects the rider, 2) an easy to ride seating area that gives riders the freedom of movement and allows them to steer effectively, 3) the glamorous tail treatment that takes into account the management of airflow behind the rider, and 4) a sensual racing form that brings all 3 of these elements together in a harmonious package. These characteristics have been splendidly reproduced in the YZF-R15.
Additionally, the designs were developed in the same modeling room where YZF-R1 designers worked. Information was shared, ensuring that the R lineage would be transmitted. In addition, the model also incorporates a multitude of adjustments for the Indian market including seat shape that allows for tandem riding (integrated with the main seat), tandem grips that are easy to grip and also contribute to the supersport design, and a riding position that takes into account comfort, etc. In other words, the YZF-R15 is characterized by a hybrid design that combines the world-class design of the “R” series with localized functions. The YZF-R15 was created to lead the supersport category in India.

They call it Lord of Streets.

Yamaha Motors which was lagging in India few years back is right on target to get back its reputation in Indian Market which it enjoyed for many years with bike like RX100 . After few months of launch of YZF R15  they launched new Yamaha FZ 16, a 153 cc bold bike. So today I finally go hand to check out this bike and present a road test here.

This new bike is priced at Rs. 65000 (ex Showroom), its again pricey as compared to other bikes in 150cc segment but hey, it is so distinct and so bold, people who want to unique will sure go for it.  We know it is sort of trimmed down version of Yamaha's global bike .. rather naked bike FZ1.  And if you give closer look, its not a direct copy of FZ1, rather look like sibling to FZ1.

First glance of bike will make you to look at it again and again. As a naked bike, Yamaha has paid so much attention to every details of the bike.  Starting with fuel tank, the fuel tank is huge, curvy shape and goes as high to the handlebars. Most part the fuel tank is plastic fairing and the real steel tank is beneath.

After that I go to Instrument Cluster, again it has unique layout and its colorful. May look cool but you need to pay extra attention to it in order to read in real life condition. Or may be I was not able to get use to it fast.
Coming to the front, the headlight, well clear Yamaha FZ1 style, the headlamp is V-shaped and looks like sleeping down with meter ie. instrument cluster at top. Overall, most important aspect of naked look.

The engine of the bike which is 153 cc with 14 PS at 7500 rpm of power and maximum torque of 13.6 delivered at 6000 rpm is also neatly packed, high attention is paid to the details of engine areas and at first glimpse it create a look of power packed bike. The bike is provided FIVE speed transmission. This power train was able to make 0-60 kmph in mere 52 seconds. Acceleration is pretty good and it won't give you hiccups while pickup.

As acceleration is smooth, you will get pretty fast soon but as you go high in speed reaching maximum or peak speed of Yamaha FZ16 is cumbersome, it will take time and effort reach peak speed which is about 114 kmph. After 95 kmph bike tends to feel little heavy on acceleration.  But remember, they call it Lord of Streets. Its meant for quick biking .. zip zap and go.. .

The bike's engine vibrations are amazingly low and it starts with throaty gruns. The exhaust of the bike is also unique  which has a loop below in engine chamber and in the end a short exhaust making it better support to torque. On design wise, the exhaust is small is sort of double layer cover which prevents it from getting it heated.

Bike sports a large front disc brake while the rear one is drum only and bike comes with all fitment as standard ie. Electric start, disc brakes, as for now there is no drum and disc brake separate model of the bike.

The rear pillion seat don't look much comfortable but its really comfortable and set just right.  One of the another unique feature of the bike is its fatty rear tyre. Its 140/60 radial tubeless tyre. This wide rubber gives an impressive rear look as well as add an stunning style to overall package. Its fattier than those many higher capacity engine bikes.

While riding positing is sporty, wider handle bar gives you are cool feeling and turning is just fun. Riding this bike on bumpy road was not so smooth, may be we need to adjust Monoshock absorbers to little more softer settings. This bikes comes monoshock suspension at rear with and comes nine suspension settings, means will have fun time with playing these settings as per conditions of roads.

As they advertised, this is really Lord of the streets, be it looks or performance. Lots of torque at lower rpm makes it choice for urban commuting. A bold bike which is definitely creating a space for itself. May be more room for Yamaha in Indian Biking Industry.

Overview Of Yamaha Fazer
Yamaha India has attacked the 150cc bike segment once again with the launch of another variant of FZ16 after the success of FZ-S. This time the company has come up with a half fairing version of the Yamaha FZ16, which has been christened Yamaha Fazer.
Yamaha Motors India has launched the 2009 model of V-Max in Indian market. V-Max is priced at Rs. 20,00,000 (Ex-Showroom New Delhi). On 16th September along with V-Max Yamaha also launched 3 limited edition variants of FZ Series:
- FZ16 Limited Edition
- FZS Limited Edition
- Fazer Limited Edition
Design & Styling Of Yamaha Fazer
The front of Fazer comes with a color co-ordinated aerodynamic cowl to keep the wind blast at bay while the riding position has been tweaked for long hour, long distance travel and comes with special anti-skid seat skin. My favourite in design terms are the all new t win headlamps which do the lightening duties upfront to keep the vision clear and also bring it in line with global Yamaha Fazer DNA.
Each and every part of Fazer has been designed with a lot of detailed attention and careful thought. This ultimate degree of perfection means even the slightest feature has not been overlooked. Only Yamaha ensures this kind of craftsmanship.
Everything about this bike is big, the wide tyres, the huge tank, the beefy forks. Viewed side on it looks like a well built athelete on the start line flexing its muscles, waiting to smash all the records. Fazer is an urban-cool motorcycle built for great performance and easy-living functionality, because that’s the whole idea of a bike like this.
The meters on the Fazer are same like other FZ Series bikes on sale in India - A Full Liquid Crystal Display (LCD). The speedometer, tachometer, trip meter, fuel gauge and other indicators are set in optimum position to keep the field of vision clear. Also, the engine starting signal is an example of the spirit of innovation.
The Fazer, gets its DNA from the global Fazer series known for their sports touring, awesome looks. It has a “Look-at-me” appeal with the triple macho design concept giving it a concentrated form with excellent ergonomics.
With its comfortable riding position and seat the rider can enjoy a week end getaway or head off on a touring holiday. Just like FZ16 and FZ-S, Fazer carries the Monocross suspension to ensure agile running performance and handling. Other than the front fairing and wider tyre New Fazer looks exactly the same like the FZ16 & FZ-S.
Engine Of Yamaha Fazer
Fazer is powered by the same 153cc engine which powers the FZ16 & FZ-S, though i expected a new engine as the weight of Fazer is more than its siblings due to the front fairing. Power output is more or less the same. The air cooled, 4 stroke, SOHC engine which generates maximum power of 14 Bhp at 7500 rpm with maximum torque of 14 Nm at 6000 rpm. The 153cc engine of this bike is designed for the urban commute. The broad tyres, low center of gravity and high torque at low rpm makes it a breeze to drive in city traffic.
The placement of this model’s ‘MidShip Muffler’ toward the center of the machine gives it a good concentration of mass, exhaust efficiency and handling. Fazer has the “140/60-17” size rear radial tyre with a 60% aspect ratio contributes to better grip and handling stability.
But auto enthusiasts like me wanted something more - bigger engine!! At least they must have plonked a 180cc or 200cc engine to compete with the likes of Pulsar 180 and recently launched Apache RTR 180.
Price & Shades Of Yamaha Fazer
Yamaha Fazer has been priced at Rs. 72000.00 (Ex-Showroom New Delhi). At this price point, it is a bit on the higher side for a 150cc bike but overall design is very smart, quality levels are up to the mark, comes with full digital console and it is a YAMAHA!!
Though one can buy the recently launched New Pulsar 220 for 70000 bucks but in comparison to Fazer, the Pulsar now looks dated with last generation styling. New Fazer is on any day a better deal than the Pulsar, Apache 180, GS150R & Karizma.
Yamaha Fazer has been launched in four shades:
- Electric Blue
- Midnight Black
- Lava Red
- Flaming Orange
Yamaha India is certainly on a roll - With the launch of Fazer thay have added another winner in their portfolio which consists of Crux, Alba, Gladiator, FZ, FZ-S, R15, R1 & MT-01.

  1. Yamaha Motor India Limited is ready to launch Yamaha FZ-16 on Indian roads by mid September 2008! The bike has all the latest technology features that the customer craves for. The stylish yet innovative FZ-16 has macho and muscular looks redefining the 150cc bikes segment. The Yamaha FZ-16 is an urban-cool motorcycle built for great performance and easy-living functionality, because that’s the whole idea of a bike like this. It keeps it simple, with street-tough naked styling and super-civilized power delivery and a specially designed riding position that gives riders extra confidence at lower speeds.
